In September 1996 Robert's Physiotherapist managed to get us accepted at this hospice. We were desperate for a break and I was very relieved to be able to leave Robert with a carer and go out with Katie and Steve. We went to the beach at Instow and just ran around with our 4 year old daughter. Another day we went to Coombe Martin Wild Life Park which was wonderful. I felt terrible leaving Rob but he was no better with us than he was being left at the hospice where he had one to one care. We just had to have some time to ourselves to become normal for a few days after having had to cope with all the tests and hospital visits. Worst of all was watching our beautiful little boy change into a screaming child who was obviously in pain and we didn't know what to do to help him. |
| Luckily we have some very good friends who live a couple of miles away from the hospice and we now arrange to see them whenever we go to stay. They have two children; Cherry and Laurel whom Katie loves to play with. Our visits are now very different to the first one as Rob now comes out with us and joins in our visits to the beach or the pub! The hospice really gave me the energy to carry on after that first visit and it gives us the chance to all be together for a weekend without having to do any household chores. Katie has a good time too, she likes to play in the soft play area or in the messy play room. There are big gardens around LBH so there is plenty of space to cycle or run around. It is very relaxed and families can come and go as they please. LBH is a charity and relies solely on donations from the public. There is currently an appeal being launched to build another hospice in the Bristol area. |
